Planning your wedding in Montana? Whether you’re tying the knot in Paradise Valley, Glacier National Park, or on a ranch near Red Lodge, choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. Your photographer isn’t just someone who takes pictures—they’re the person capturing moments you’ll treasure forever.
But how do you know if a photographer is the one? Asking the right questions can make all the difference. As a Montana wedding photographer myself, I’m sharing the top questions every bride should ask before booking—plus the answers you should be looking for!
How Would You Describe Your Photography Style?
Why it matters: You want a photographer whose style matches your vision. If you’re dreaming of bright, timeless, romantic images, you won’t be happy with someone who specializes in dark and moody vibes.
➡️ What to listen for: Descriptions like bright, natural, romantic, timeless, or editorial, depending on what you love. Check their portfolio to see if it consistently reflects the style they describe!
✨ My style? I specialize in timeless, iconic images that feel bright, natural, and effortless—perfect for Montana’s wide-open landscapes and romantic outdoor weddings. I intentionally avoid trendy editing styles (like overly dark or heavily filtered looks) because I believe your wedding photos should never feel dated. My goal is to deliver images that will look just as beautiful and classic decades from now as they do today—photos you’ll be proud to frame, share, and pass down for generations.
How Many Weddings Have You Photographed? Have You Shot at My Venue (or Similar Locations)?
Why it matters: Experience is everything. Montana weddings can be unpredictable (weather, lighting, remote locations!), and you want someone who knows how to handle all of it with ease.
➡️ What to listen for: A photographer who is confident with all lighting situations, experienced in outdoor weddings, and familiar with venues similar to yours (bonus points if they know how to work with the Montana weather!).
Pro Tip: Even if they haven’t shot at your exact venue, ask if they’re willing to scout it beforehand!
Can I See a Full Wedding Gallery?
Why it matters: Portfolios and Instagram grids only show the best of the best. A full gallery gives you a realistic idea of what your complete wedding collection will look like—from getting ready to the dance floor.
➡️ What to look for: Consistency! Make sure their editing style and quality are consistent in all lighting situations (bright sun, dark receptions, etc.).
What’s Included in Your Wedding Collections?
Why it matters: Wedding photography packages can vary a lot. Understanding what’s included helps you compare options and ensures you’re getting what you need.
➡️ Questions to ask:
- How many hours of coverage are included?
- Is an engagement session part of the package?
- Do you offer albums or prints?
- Do you charge travel fees for locations in Montana?
- Will there be a second photographer? (hint: I always shoot with a second shooter, often my husband!)
How Do You Handle Bad Weather?
Why it matters: Montana weather can be wild. One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s raining or snowing. You need a photographer who’s prepared for anything.
➡️ What to listen for: Someone who embraces the adventure and has experience shooting in all kinds of conditions. Whether it’s bringing clear umbrellas, knowing how to pose you in the wind, or using off-camera lighting for dark clouds, they should have a game plan.
How Do You Help Us Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera?
Why it matters: Most couples aren’t professional models, and wedding photos can feel a little awkward—at first! A photographer who makes you feel relaxed and confident will capture the best, most natural moments.
➡️ What to listen for: Someone who gives gentle direction, focuses on candid moments, and creates a fun experience (yes, even for grooms who hate photos!).
My approach? I’ll guide you with easy prompts, keep things fun and lighthearted, and make sure you look natural and relaxed in every photo.
When Will We Receive Our Photos?
Why it matters: You’ll be so excited to relive your wedding day—you’ll want to know when you can expect your gallery.
➡️ What to expect: Every photographer’s timeline is different, but you should know upfront. I deliver sneak peeks within a week and your full gallery within 6-8 weeks, with options to rush if you’re extra excited!
How Do You Back Up Our Images?
Why it matters: Once your wedding is over, your photos are priceless. Knowing how your photographer backs up and protects your memories is key.
➡️ What to listen for: A system that includes dual memory card shooting (backing up as they shoot), hard drive storage, and cloud backups. Peace of mind is everything!
What Happens if You Can’t Make it to Our Wedding Day?
Why it matters: Life happens. You need to know there’s a backup plan in place.
➡️ What to look for: A clear answer about how they handle emergencies. Do they have a network of trusted photographers who can step in? Will they refund you?
For me? I have a solid network of talented Montana photographers who can cover in an emergency, and my second shooter (my husband!) can step in while we coordinate additional coverage.
Why Should We Choose You As Our Montana Wedding Photographer?
Why it matters: You’ll spend a lot of time with your photographer on your wedding day. Beyond talent, you want someone you feel connected to and trust.
➡️ What to listen for: Someone who gets excited about your love story, is genuinely invested in your day, and makes you feel comfortable and confident.
